Requirements for an annual visa for Thailand

Unfortunately, the Kingdom of Thailand doesn’t exactly make it easy for foreigners to stay in the country for any length of time. As an ordinary tourist, it is comparatively simple: after landing, you go to immigration, show your passport and boarding pass as well as any hotel booking and receive an entry stamp, which entitles you to stay for up to 30 days. With a little nerve and effort, this permit can be extended once at a local immigration office for a further 30 days. After that, however, it is definitely time to leave the country.

The situation is different with the various visa types. These entitle you to a longer stay. The choice of visa needs to be carefully considered. Depending on the planned length of stay and the associated formalities, different types of visa are more or less suitable.

This also applies to emigration. For a permanent relocation to Thailand, there are also strategically better or rather unsuitable options. A strong partner with experience and know-how can certainly help here.

What visa types are available for Thailand?

We have already described in the introduction that there are different types of visas for different purposes of stay. Below is a concrete list of the most important visas.

Tourist (TR): With a TR visa, a foreigner may enter Thailand for 60 days. The visa can be extended once for a further 30 days at a local immigration office, after which the person must leave the Kingdom again. This is therefore not an annual visa for Thailand in the true sense of the word.

Long stay (O-A): With the O-A visa, foreigners are allowed to stay in Thailand for a whole year. The period of validity is set at one year from the outset (unlike the non-immigrant O retirement visa, see below). However, some special requirements must be met for the O-A, such as health insurance with a certain level of cover recognized by the Thai government. Swiss Helping Point will be happy to help you with this annual visa for Thailand.

Non-immigrant O (retirement visa): This type of visa is very popular as it does not require health insurance as the O-A does. However, the non-immigrant O visa is only issued for 3 months and then has to be extended to one year in Thailand with varying degrees of effort. Where you are staying in Thailand certainly plays a role here. As many foreigners are probably already aware, the bureaucratic hurdles vary from area to area. While some immigration authorities are comparatively simple and reliable, in other places it can quickly become complicated and time-consuming. Extending the non-immigrant O to an annual visa for Thailand is the key to enjoy a long-stay in Thailand without health insurance.

The Swiss Helping Point has been providing its customers with reliable advice on all possible issues for over 24 years. We are also happy to support you in obtaining a suitable annual visa for Thailand so that you are ready for longer stays in the Kingdom in the future. Originally conceived as a service for the Swiss, Swiss Helping Point now helps people from the entire D-A-CH region and is therefore also able to assist Germans in obtaining an annual visa for Thailand.
