Marriage in Thailand

Many Swiss people decide – after their girlfriend has spent a three-month vacation in Switzerland several times – to get married here in Thailand.

The main reason is certainly the conviction that we have finally found the right partner. Another important reason is often not to have to go through the complex and time-consuming visa procedure for the girlfriend every time, especially since the Swiss control bodies have to reckon with a rejection every time.

Necessary documents for marriage in Thailand

The Swiss need a bunch of different documents for this.
After an initial contact, you will receive detailed information from us as to which documents are involved. Your documents do not need to be translated into Thai for a marriage in Thailand.

Your future wife will also need various original documents for marriage in Thailand. There can be a lot of different documents that are required for this. This differs from person to person depending on their situation. You will also receive detailed information on this after an initial contact. The original documents of your future wife must be legalized and translated into German.

Since the marriage in Thailand must also be registered in Switzerland, the Thai documents must be translated into German for the Swiss authorities. If the documents of both bride and groom are correct and complete, the future spouse can submit his complete dossier in Switzerland. After the documents have been submitted, it takes about 2 months for the responsible offices to issue the certificate of fitness to marry. As soon as the marriage certificate is available at the Swiss embassy in Bangkok, the ” marriage application” can also be applied for there. Only with this document can a civil marriage in Thailand be held.

After the civil marriage in Thailand, the bride has to go through a set official process, which we will describe to you and your wife in detail and of course also accompany and support you. This process starts with the name change in Tabien Baan at your local authority up to the special multiple visa application at the Swiss embassy.
The Swiss embassy then sends the applications to Switzerland so that the marriage can also be officially registered with the authorities in Switzerland. The registration period usually lasts 6-8 weeks. If the marriage is registered everywhere, the Thai wife can easily enter Switzerland.

After entering the country, you will receive a “B” residence permit from the residents’ registration office, which is valid for one year and must be renewed every year. This permit also gives her the right to look for a job in Switzerland.

Cultural customs

After the civil marriage, it is of course up to the bridal couple how and where they would like to celebrate their marriage with their relatives. However, the local wedding celebration is of great importance for the reputation of the bride. As many guests as possible should be invited and nine monks should not be missing.

The traditional “bride money” to the parents is intended to save the bride’s face, since the value of the bride determines the image of the family in the village community. The amount of this “bride money” depends heavily on the social status of the family. The bride’s education and age also play a role. Not to forget, of course, the financial possibilities of the husband. After all, the candidate should not already be in financial difficulties before the marriage. A binding reference figure cannot be given. However, we can give you recommendations.

It is advisable to arrange the financial matters in advance in order to avoid misunderstandings and disappointments on the part of the bride. In general, mixed marriages are exposed to greater stress due to the different cultures. Happiness and unhappiness are often close together. A precise timetable – which is approved by both beforehand – helps to prevent some things that can separate later. A lot of patience and the will to learn your partner’s language are elementary and important.
